Also, very importantly, unless you're on legendary, you can use the pause button in real-time battles to plan, which is highly important. Learn all of these things and more to succeed in anything higher than normal. Good decision - Attila is the best historical TW imo. I regard it as the anti-Rome 2: Rome 2 just lacked challenge and immersion for me Attila has those in spades. There are two playable factions - West and East Romans. But don't be deterred from playing Romans, if you like Romans. ![]() My first faction was WRE and I've been playing them ever since, alternating with ERE. The Romans play into the whole "end times" vibe that Attila has - the whole world is coming for you, it is epic. If you play Romans, do not retreat! Ignore those early guides that tell you to abandon your frontier and retreat to Spain/Italy. It's not necessary - the advice came about at launch when WRE had 80% corruption, so individual provinces gave very little money. That was patched down to 60% but it was never necessary. Some keys for Romans are (a) demolish all but 1 church (b) defensive testudo always (c) crossbows (d) manual settlement defence always (e) for WRE, take Africa and Britain (aka secure your flanks) Yes, retreat may make your life easier but for me the fun is fighting for every single settlement. The best economic investment is province food self-sufficiency. If a province doesn't have enough food, income is cut 25% and happiness takes a 20% hit. No gold mine or other investment is going to match raising income 25%. (In fact, gold mines are poor economic investments in Attila: the smart money is in commercial ports and sheep farms). If you tax exempt a province (e.g your military recruitment province), it gets no penalty for food insecurity and does not add up to the faction food deficit/surplus (which in turn affects desertion).Īfter food security, your second building priority is public order. For example, Romans can expect to have a level 3 arena and governor's house in every city. Don't worry though - public order buildings give wealth, at least for Romans, so as you stabilise public order, your finances improve. These public order buildings will need more food, so get those fishing ports and farms going. I never seem to have the luxury to build purely economic buildings. In the short run, public order can be managed by using priests, governors, tax exemptions and stationing armies in settlements.ĭiplomacy is very powerful in Attila. ![]() For example, if WRE persuade the Franks to attack the Saxons on turn 1, they have taken out the threat from two of their closest rivals for several years. Most factions at peace are quite keen to join a war, so every turn, I go down the list of all factions and persuade some to join my struggles.
